It's Velochick's birthday today! Yippee! What's even better news is that she's moving back to the States. The bad news; she'll be in Texas. ;-) The things we do for love.
If I'm remembering correctly, it's not just Texas but Lubbock, Texas. I lived there one summer in the early 70s when my dad taught a summer session at the law school. I was about five. My memories:
1. Cicadas
2. Giant purpose-driven hornet-like insects called cicada killers. One guess as to thepurpose
3. The daycare with mean kids, gross cornbread and swarms of flying ants on the playground
4. A neat park called Maxey Park with the coolest play equipment ever
5. Prarie dog towns
6. My mother drove through a swarm of flying ants on the highway
You may have noticed that two-thirds of these memories involve insects. But I was only a little kid. Probably for your friend it will be more like half.
Thanks, syp! It was a super day indeed. mwr--you're correct--I'm Lubbock-bound. And the funny thing is, any of the bad Lubbock stories that have leaked by the man all have to do with the weather (sand storms, raining mud, the wind, etc). I haven't heard about the insects yet and this is very helpful news. My direct experience with them last weekend is that they are slow and dumb--we were getting munched on by mosquitoes becasue of an earlier rain, but they were suspiciously easy to smack and obliterate all over our feet, legs, and arms (although I could do without the little blood bombs they create when you do that to them). We have uber-mosquitoes up here in Alberta who have perfected the art of drive-by munching and by the time you get your hand over to smack them, they're outta there. Sly little suckers. I'm going to have to check in with THM about the cicadas and flying ants straight away. On the upside, the prairie dog towns are still there and some of them are being kidnapped and domesticated in pet stores, and then sold for $100.
